These are done from a circle from whence the shot is put and the discus is thrown. The shot circle is smaller than the discus circle and has a stop board. The discus can be thrown any way but best results are achieved by using the correct method. The shot must be put from the shoulder, close to the neck. In both events the throw, or the put, as the case may be, is a foul if any of the following occur:
- The athlete steps out of the circle after the throwing stance has been taken up
- The athlete leaves the circle from the front half.
- The athlete fails to have one foot in contact with the back half of the circle before stepping out.
- If the shot or discus lands outside the sector lines.
Specific foul rules apply to the shot in that it must be put with one hand and that hand must not drop below the shoulder line during the put.
